Yes it's a good point: we can get caught up with 'boutique' foods that we feel operate at a level above what we normally eat while often not taking into account that the normal foods we buy have as much power in assuring the future of many food producers. Buying plain old Irih food means we can have a reliable supply of safe food from our own country. So it's the everyday buying decisions we make that secures us decent food in the long run xsuzannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06688359157849015354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-770213180755051769.post-91765645197506426482011-09-11T05:04:05.207-07:002011-09-11T05:04:05.207-07:00You know, you make a very good point Suzanne and I...You know, you make a very good point Suzanne and I'll bet that many of us could single handedly make a nice long list of things we feel 'should' be protected.

Bread is a hard one because of the flour not coming from Ireland, but there are a lot of home-grown/produced goods that should be given PGI status.

Butter and cheese are obvious choices but trying to pull regionally produced goods to the table might take a bit of selling.

If we, as consumers, are not really promoting (by buying and eating) our own locally produced goodies (but are buying cheaper sausages from Poland at the shop) then it is hard for a producer to get the backing they need to gain said status.

Great fodder for thought as always,

Móna

PS - Sorry I did not get a chance to say hi to you on Friday at Bord Bia but had to dash home to the neglected husband and kiddies.WiseMónahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12560896411311415348noreply@blogger.com
